Subject: Jensen Maritime Consultants Designs F/V ALPINE COVE, New 76′ x 30′ Crabber/Tender/Longliner for Robert Gustafson, Diamond Lake, OR
Jensen Maritime Consultants, Inc. (JMC) recently completed the design for the new 76′ x 30′ crabber/tender/longliner ALPINE COVE. The Seattle naval architecture firm designed the new vessel for Robert “Gus” Gustafson of Diamond Lake, Oregon. The vessel is currently under construction at Fred Wahl Marine Construction (FWMC), Reedsport, Oregon and is scheduled to be delivered to the Owner in May 2001.
The ALPINE COVE is the ninth fishing vessel built by Fred Wahl Marine Construction to designs by Jensen Maritime Consultants. It follows immediately the JMC-designed and FWMC-built SHEMYA, a 59′ x 28′ longliner due to be delivered to the Owners in December 2000.
JMC has developed a sizable clientele stemming from length and gross tonnage regulatory limits imposed on commercial fishermen in the United States. JMC has designed several 58′ salmon seiners, 32′ salmon gillnetters, and sponson retrofits of vessels up to and including the 140′ range, particularly in Alaska. In many cases the customer has desired to put as much vessel in a limited length as possible, and JMC has put forth a design that satisfies that need, as well as having good seakeeping and hull resistance qualities.
In February 1999 Gus Gustafson met with Jensen Maritime to discuss the prospects of building a new vessel. The ALPINE COVE was developed from JMC’s extensive design experience in raised foc’sle, house forward fishing vessels of this type. An initial baseline for the design was developed from the OSSIAN, a 85′ x 26′ JMC-designed fishing vessel constructed in 1999 at Fred Wahl Marine Construction. The maximum length was established at 76′ overall by the Owner, and the beam and depth of the vessel adjusted to suit stability and capacity requirements.
The ALPINE COVE is equipped for crabbing and salmon tendering as well as longlining. The vessel was designed to carry 80 king crab pots and have a hold capacity of approximately 5000 cubic feet. Fish will be preserved in two cargo holds by refrigerated seawater. The fish holds will be constructed to very high sanitary standards, utilizing fiberglass liners, aluminum bin boards, and stainless steel fittings and sump screens. In addition, the design will also be superb for trawling, with the addition of a trawl gantry, stern ramp, and fishing equipment and gear.
The hull, pilothouse, freestanding mast, and rigging are steel. The ALPINE COVE is also equipped with a removable aluminum fairweather at the port side and a foc’sle deck overhang aft of the pilothouse to protect the crew while working the gear. The ALPINE COVE is fitted with a bulbous bow, which significantly helps reduce pitching motions in heavy head seas and provides an increase in speed.
