F/V CAITLIN ANN Rebuilding - 104' x 33' Crabber/Trawler
File No. 98018
Subject: John & Bob Dooley Take Delivery of F/V CAITLIN ANN, a trawler deepening designed by Jensen Maritime Consultants
Jensen Maritime Consultants (JMC) provided engineering for the deepening of this recently delivered fishing vessel. The project had to be completed within a tight budget and a short delivery schedule so the owners could start fishing again as soon as possible. JMC has a long history of helping owners improve stability and carrying capacity of fishing vessels through modifications such as sponsoning, deepening, or lengthening.
One of the many challenges of this type of project is keeping the modified vessel under 200 regulatory tons. JMC reduced the regulatory tonnage of this vessel with deep frames and tonnage openings, incorporating the changes into the new and existing structure. The tonnage plan was reviewed prior to construction to ensure that the vessel would be less than 200 tons. In fact, the CAITLIN ANN's tonnage increased by only one ton. JMC also provided stability calculations for this vessel after completion.
The CAITLIN ANN was launched in 1990 as a 74' x 23' crabber/trawler. In 1992, she was sponsoned by 10 feet and lengthened in the midbody by 30 feet to a Jensen Maritime Consultants design. In order to increase the vessel's hold capacity and full load freeboard, a new trawl deck was added to the vessel. The new deck is 5'-0" above the existing main deck.
To improve visibility over the higher deck, the pilothouse is raised above a new machinery space. To increase accommodations space, the foc'sle was extended 14 feet. The aftmost hold was converted from a dry hold to a seawater fish hold. All four fish holds are insulated and extended up to the new trawl deck. In a future project, the Owner plans to add a bulbous bow to the CAITLIN ANN to reduce resistance and improve seakeeping. The new fish holds have approximately 60% more usable volume than the previous holds.
The converted particulars of the CAITLIN ANN are as follows:
Length, overall
103'-8"
