F/V ZOLOTOI Sponsoning & Deepening - 101' x 36' Crabber

Subject: Zolotoi Partnership Takes Delivery of F/V ZOLOTOI, a crabber sponsoning and deepening designed by Jensen Maritime Consultants
Jensen Maritime Consultants provided engineering for the sponsoning and deepening of this recently delivered fishing vessel. The project had to be completed within a tight budget and a short delivery schedule so the owners could start fishing again as soon as possible. Jensen Maritime Consultants has a long history of helping owners improve stability and carrying capacity of fishing vessels through modifications such as sponsoning, deepening, or lengthening. The ZOLOTOI was Jensen Maritime's 49th sponsoning design.
One of the many challenges of this type of project is keeping the modified vessel under 200 regulatory tons. JMC reduced the regulatory tonnage of this vessel with deep frames and tonnage openings, incorporating the changes into the new and existing structure. The tonnage plan was reviewed prior to construction to ensure that the vessel would be less than 200 tons. In fact, the ZOLOTOI's measured tonnage was reduced through these modifications. JMC also provided stability calculations for this vessel after completion.
The ZOLOTOI was launched in 1977 as a 98' x 24' Bender crabber. After many years in the Alaskan crab fisheries, the Owners decided to deepen and sponson the ZOLOTOI to increase stability and carrying capacity. The vessel was widened to 36', and aft of the foc'sle the main deck was raised two feet. At the same time, the pilothouse was raised to improve visibility over the wider hull, and fairweathers were added to enclose most of the working deck. These modifications more than doubled the crab pot carrying capacity, and increased hold volume by 80%.
The two existing fish holds were extended to the old shell plating. The centerline stern tank was converted from fuel oil to seawater ballast. Additional fuel capacity was added in the sponsons. The refrigeration machinery for the insulated fish holds and bait freezer was moved into the sponson spaces outboard of the existing deckhouse.
In the engine room, a new GM 12V-149 DDEC engine drives the ZOLOTOI through a Reintjes gear and the existing shafting. None of the other machinery was replaced. The engine room gained some storage space where the fresh water tanks were moved into the sponsons.
The working deck is enclosed by a nine foot high fairweather, except at the transom and the pot hauling station on the starboard side. Doors in the fairweather allow pots to be dropped over the stern of the vessel. A removable line bin with an independent coiler is installed on the starboard side.
The converted particulars of the ZOLOTOI are as follows:
