Subject: Tim Longrich Takes Delivery of F/V SHUYAK, a New 58' x 23' Longliner/Crabber Designed by Jensen Maritime Consultants
Jensen Maritime Consultants, Inc. (JMC) recently completed the design for the new 58' x 23' longliner/crabber SHUYAK. The Seattle naval architecture firm has designed the new vessel for Tim Longrich of Kodiak, Alaska. Fred Wahl Marine Construction, Reedsport, Oregon delivered the vessel to the Owners in July, 1997.
The SHUYAK, crewed by Longrich and his sons, departed Fred Wahl's facility on July 27 for the halibut and black cod longline fisheries around Kodiak Island. The contract for construction was signed in February of this year. The five month construction schedule is the shortest achieved in recent years for a Jensen designed 58 footer.

The short schedule came about after an extensive search for an existing vessel that would meet Tim Longrich's needs. Months of searching did not yield a vessel he felt was a good investment, so he then decided to have a new boat built.
In early February he met with Jensen Maritime to discuss the prospects of building a new vessel. Jensen Maritime has four 58 footer stock designs that have been numerically control (NC) lofted. These vessels are all raised foc'sle designs similar to the SHUYAK, ranging in beam from 19 feet to 24 feet. Tim Longrich chose the 58' x 23' version, with some minor modifications.
A bid specification was quickly developed and was sent to Fred Wahl. The SHUYAK is the sixth vessel of similar type built by Fred Wahl Marine Construction to designs by Jensen Maritime Consultants. Therefore, Fred Wahl was able to return an accepted fixed price bid within just one week, and construction commenced soon thereafter.
Phase II Design of Chehalis, Washington performed the numerical control (NC) lofting for Fred Wahl in support of steel and aluminum fabrication. Seaport Steel in Seattle supplied the structural materials and plate cutting. Phase II and Seaport also reacted swiftly to ensure a quick startup of hull construction.
The SHUYAK was built under cover in Fred Wahl's large fabrication building, allowing the shipyard to effectively ignore the Northwest's unusually bad winter and spring weather this year.
The SHUYAK is equipped to longline for halibut and black cod (sablefish), as well as crabbing and salmon tendering. Fish will be preserved in two cargo holds either by ice or refrigerated sea water. The fish holds and bait hold have been constructed to very high sanitary standards, utilizing fiberglass lining, aluminum bin boards, and stainless steel fittings and sump screens.
The hull, freestanding mast, and rigging are steel. The pilot house is aluminum, attached to the steel foc'sle deck by a welded aluminum/steel transition joint. The SHUYAK is also equipped with a removable aluminum bait shed at the stern to protect the crew while baiting the gear. The bait shed will be removed when the SHUYAK goes crabbing. The bait shed was designed and built as a bolt-on structure in two pieces so that the Owners can transport the shed to a storage facility on a normal width flat bed truck.
The SHUYAK is fitted with a molded type bulbous bow, which helps reduce pitching motions in heavy head seas. Tim Longrich considered this important factor when selecting the design.
The specifications for the SHUYAK called for very high standards with regard to corrosion control in order to minimize hull maintenance. To meet these requirements, the builder provided stainless steel hatch and door coamings throughout the vessel, pre-bent stainless steel hydraulic tubing in all weather areas, stainless steel bilge lines for the fish holds and lazarette, and stainless steel for all fasteners exposed to weather or in the fish holds. The paint system is by Devoe, and includes zinc primer on all topside steel structure to provide a good foundation for the epoxy mid and color coats. The insulated fish hold hatches are aluminum diamond plate.
The SHUYAK's accommodations provide comfortable quarters for as many as eight crew, although most of the time the vessel will be operated with a crew of four or five. The accommodations are tastefully outfitted with light pear paneling and Honduras mahogany trim. The exterior hull is light gray with black and white trim. The pilot house and mast are white with navy blue trim.

A substantial portion of the machinery aboard the SHUYAK, including engines, controls, and pumps, were supplied by Curry Marine in Newport, Oregon. The shafting and propeller package was supplied by Independent Marine Propeller in Portland.
All of the parties involved with the design and construction of the SHUYAK knew from the start that a five month schedule for a high quality vessel would be a challenge. Jensen Maritime Consultants would like to extend their thanks to Tim Longrich and family for being a great customer. Tim held a positive attitude throughout the design and construction of the SHUYAK, and made timely and practical decisions as necessary to aid the builder in keeping the project on track.
